Hikers stranded on Maui trail by pit bull

HAWAII -- An aggressive pit bull stranded a group of hikers on the Waihee Ridge Trail above Wailuku Sunday morning, until emergency crews were able to help them down, Maui police said in a news release.

Police, medics and animal control personnel responded to a call on the trail at about 9:09 a.m.

Medics treated a female hiker for a dog bite and the hikers were escorted down the trail without further incident.

Animal Control officers captured the pit bull. Police said it's not known who owns the dog.

  1. If it had been a bear or a wolf, the animal would have been hunted down and shot. How is it we've come to tolerate mauling grippers everywhere we go?
