Louisiana: Pit bull mauls 12-year-old. Town has had BSL for 2 years.

LOUISIANA -- A 12-year-old boy is in the hospital after a pit bull attacked him Tuesday in the Town of Washington.

Washington Police Chief Ronelle Broussard said his office was informed of the attack near the intersection of Prescott and West Hill streets about 1:30 p.m.

He said the animal allegedly attacked the investigating officer, forcing that officer to shoot and kill the dog.

Opelousas General Health System admitted the boy for injuries to his arm and stomach.

Broussard officers in his department arrested the dog's owner on suspicion he has violated the town's pit bull ordinance, and the case is under investigation.

BREED SPECIFIC LAWS IN PLACE ALREADY

In 2012 Washington passed an ordinance requiring pit bulls to be kept on leashes with muzzles or in kennels with secure roofs and floors at all times.

That ordinance also requires pit bull owners to maintain a $100,000 insurance policy.

Broussard said it may be time to again round up dogs whose owners are not in compliance with the law.
