ARIZONA -- A 6-year-old boy is in the hospital after authorities say a pit-bull mix wandered into the yard of a Phoenix home on Thursday afternoon and bit him in the hand and head.
The 3-year-old dog did not have a collar or identification tags when he entered through an open gate in a backyard near McKinley Street and 31st Avenue, where a 6-year-old and his 4-year-old brother were playing about 1:30 p.m., said Melissa Gable, a spokeswoman for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.
Investigators are calling the boy's injuries punctures, saying that the incident was not a mauling.
The dog is being held at the Maricopa County facility for bite quarantine, where it will be monitored for any signs of rabies, Gable said. They are also scanning the dog for a microchip in an attempt to locate his owner.
