Gavin Turner Mills, of the 1400 block of Southwest Goodman Avenue in Port St. Lucie, was arrested on two felony counts of animal cruelty.
Port St. Lucie police on Sunday went to an address on Durham Terrace, where a woman said her dog, Meryl, was missing before Christmas. She said a second pooch, Fluffy, was missing when she came home that day.
The woman said her 16-year-old son reported his friend, Mills, "told him he killed both dogs."
The 16-year-old told police that Mills told him he choked Meryl and broke Meryl's windpipe because Meryl urinated on the bed while Mills was sleeping over.
The 16-year-old said Mills told him it was an accident and that Mills showed him where he left Meryl along a canal bank.
The 16-year-old said that on Sunday, Mills was in the living room while he was in the kitchen. The 16-year-old said he heard a dog yelp or scream in the living room. The 16-year-old said he wasn't worried because they have several dogs and yelping is a regular occurrence.
The 16-year-old said that he and Mills walked to a store to get a sandwich and when they returned Fluffy was dead. The 16-year-old said Mills then threw Fluffy's body over the fence.
Mills told police he was "throwing/flipping" Fluffy in the air. He said Fluffy hit the floor and walked away.
The 16-year-old denied playing a role in the dogs' deaths.
Police recovered the remains of both dogs.
The mother of the 16-year-old showed investigators several of Mills' Facebook postings, "where he told other people that he killed both of her dogs," an affidavit states.
Mills was arrested in a separate case on a felony possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon or delinquent charge in connection with a New Year's Day incident.
He is accused of taking his father's .357 Magnum handgun and brandishing it at a house party. Mills said he left the gun outside and that it was stolen.
Mills was held Tuesday in the St. Lucie County Jail on $22,500 bond, a jail official said.
