Elkland man admits animal cruelty in dog death

PENNSYLVANIA -- The Elkland man accused of letting a dog starve to death in a pet crate entered a guilty plea Monday to one count of animal cruelty in Tioga County, Pa., Court, a court spokeswoman said.

A pre-sentence investigation was ordered for Matthew Scott Stone, 29, of East Main Street, she said. He is scheduled to be sentenced at 8:45 a.m. Aug. 18, she said.

[How about a mental evaluation?]

The young adult male dog was found Jan. 19 frozen inside a pet crate in a field in Farmington Township and likely died by starvation, according to a criminal complaint filed in district court in Elkland.

Trooper Steven Moyemont of state police in Mansfield said Stone admitted to abandoning the dog in the locked plastic crate, the complaint says.

Stone said the dog was still alive inside the crate when he dropped it off, and he assumed someone would see the dog and take it after he left, the complaint says.

Can you imagine what this poor little dog went through?

When dog’s frozen body was found, it was curled up inside the crate, about 100 feet from Cummings Creek Road, upside down in snow-covered brush, according to people familiar with the case.

In March, the Norfolk, Va.-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Tioga County District Attorney George Wheeler urging him to prosecute Stone vigorously.
