Felony animal-cruelty charges leveled at cat hoarder in Butte

MONTANA -- A Butte man faces felony charges after authorities found more than 80 cats in a home last week.

Butte police arrested 54-year-old Douglas Billman Saturday on a warrant charging him with seven felony counts of cruelty to animals. He is accused of keeping more than 80 cats in a small residence he rents in Butte.

Animal control responded to the home last week after a neighbor complained of a rancid odor.

The cats were found in a filthy conditions and animal control spent a week removing the animals from the feces-filled home.

Some of the cats taken from the home were in poor medical condition and had to be put down. The rest are being cleaned and examined by veterinarians at the Butte animal shelter.

Billman is expected to make an initial appearance in Justice Court Tuesday.
