Forty-four Dogs Rescued From Central Texas Breeder

TEXAS -- Forty-four dogs were rescued on Monday from a breeder having trouble providing proper care.

 

 The dogs have sores and rotting teeth and, according to Texas Humane Heroes (TXHH), weren't getting enough attention or affection. Rescuers say the dogs are victims of another Central Texas breeder having to close its doors.

Texas Humane Heroes calls it "heartbreaking."

 

"Some inhumane conditions," said Eran Fehily, Director of Community Relations and Development at TXHH. "Many of the dogs have come to TXHH in poor physical condition, needing dental care, vaccinations, and grooming. Dogs were seen with skin sores, missing and rotting teeth, and in great need of individual attention and affection.

"Several of the adult female dogs are pregnant and will be placed into foster care immediately to care for the mothers and the eventual birth of the puppies."

The problem stems from over breeding.

"The market isn't there anymore," said Fehily.

Business is down as more people adopt instead of buy.

"Our community is choosing to adopt animals that are homeless," said Fehily. "To know that our community is actively supporting animal welfare through the adoption of homeless animals as a family companion is heart-warming to say the least. Hearing that the breeding facilities are closing and breeders are willingly turning over the animals to organizations like ours is certainly a step in the right direction."

Audra and David Cox wanted a puppy and only considered rescues.

"It seemed better than buying from a breeder," said Audra.

That attitude has some breeders shutting down and surrendering their dogs to adoption groups like this one. That leaves dogs, like Mandy, in a better place, but still in need of a home.

The 44 dogs surrendered to TXHH include Chihuahuas, Poodles, Shih Tzu's, Cocker Spaniels, and Schnauzers. They will go up for adoption this week.

According to TXHH many of the dogs from this breeder rescue effort will be available for adoption at the Texas Humane Heroes - Killeen Adoption Center, located at 5501 Clear Creek Road beginning Wednesday, July 9.

Additional dogs from the rescue will be available for adoption at the TXHH Leander Adoption Center, located at 10930 E Crystal Falls Pkwy beginning Friday, July 11.
