Long Island man charged with animal cruelty after dog dies in hot car

NEW YORK --  A Long Island man is charged with animal cruelty after investigators found his dog dead inside his parked car.

Police say 36-year-old Ian Kassof, of Valley Stream, left the pit bull-boxer mix in the car for several hours with the window cracked and no water bowl earlier this month.

The dog suffered a seizure and died of suffocation in the hot car.

"Opening a car window a few inches is not enough to prevent tragedies like this one," District Attorney Kathleen Rice said. "This owner should have known better than to trap his dog for hours in his car without adequate ventilation or water. A parked car on a hot day, even with a window cracked open, is a potentially deadly place for any living thing."

Kassof's attorney said he had to go to work and had no place to leave the dog, which he had rescued from the Town of Hempstead shelter. He said he walked the dog and gave it water during the day.

Kassof pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty and was released without bail. He faces up to one year in jail if convicted.
