Louisiana: Leonard Harvey cited after his pit bulls maul woman and her Sheltie

LOUISIANA -- Two pit bulls were shot on a walking trail near Slidell after they attacked a woman and her miniature collie (Shetland Sheepdog, Sheltie) Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The woman was taken to a hospital with bite wounds to her left arm and left leg, and her dog was transported to a local veterinary clinic to be treated for its wounds.

One of the attacking pit bulls was killed by a gunshot and the other was wounded and later euthanized due to the extent of its injuries and the fear that it may attack again, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

The woman was walking her dog on a trail in the Belair subdivision near Hunters Point Road at about 8 a.m. Wednesday when the pit bulls approached and began attacking her collie. When she attempted to stop them, they turned on her, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A neighbor who heard the woman screaming responded and fired a shot from a 9 mm pistol, killing one of the pit bulls and injuring the other. The wounded dog fled, the Sheriff's Office said.

The owner of the pit bulls, Leonard Harvey, 22, was located by deputies at his residence at 3031 Golden Drive and issued a misdemeanor summons for violating the parish leash law.

Representatives of the parish's animal services department arrived and took possession of the wounded pit bull and the body of the dead dog. Harvey later decided to have the injured dog euthanized, authorities said.
