Man arrested on animal cruelty charges in beating of puppy

VIRGINIA -- A 33-year-old Virginia Beach man was arrested on animal cruelty charges in connection to the beating death of a puppy last month, police said.

John James Schultz III, of the 3600 block of Sea Gull Road, was charged with felony animal cruelty and released on bond, according to a Virginia Beach Police Department news release.

Animal Control officers seized from the residence the 5-month-old puppy and took it to the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center June 5 after a report that he had not received medical attention for his injuries.

An examination revealed that the puppy had multiple injuries caused by severe forceful trauma.  Due to the severity of the injuries, he had to be euthanized, according to police.

Two additional adult dogs were removed from the home during the investigation and are being cared for at the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center, police said.
