Glenn Boulet Sr., 61, was attacked near his home at 318 S. Ninth St. at 7:03 p.m. Monday. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital where he has received two surgeries and is expected to have more facial reconstructive work, his family said.
Cpl. Michael Mahan, public information officer for the Muskogee Police Department, said the attack was a vicious one that might have resulted in Boulet’s death if it weren’t for the determination of two men.
“Their intervention more than likely saved his life,” Mahan said.
Thomas Harper said he was visiting his friend, Allen O’Laughlin, when he heard Boulet’s cries and knew what was happening.
“We heard a guy hollerin’ and we ran around there and tried to get the dogs off,” Harper said.
The two men used baseball bats to try to separate the dogs from Boulet, but it didn’t work.
“They didn’t try to attack us. They were locked on this guy,” Harper said. “We had to use a gun to get them to go away.”
Mahan said the dogs gave Boulet severe wounds to the face and arm.
“They may have potentially killed this guy,” Mahan said.
Harper said the dogs severely injured Boulet’s face.
“You could see his sinus cavities, his teeth, and his ear was gone,” Harper said.
An Animal Control officer killed one of the dogs on scene, and the other dog, who had received gunshot wounds from O’Laughlin, was found 13 blocks away. Both dogs are dead, and both will be tested for rabies, Mahan said.
Boulet’s family was upset that nothing had been done prior to the attack to remove the dogs. Boulet’s son, Glenn Lolles, said the dogs were dangerous.
“We called the dog pound three days after the bit someone down here,” Lolles said.
Lolles said the dogs were to blame for the death of a neighbor’s cat and rabbits.
The dogs’ owners were not home at the time of the attack, but have been contacted. Mahan said criminal charges will be filed.
“We are still in the process of determining what will be filed,” Mahan said.
