Man is mauled in street by sister's Shar Pei as he takes it for evening walk

UNITED KINGDOM -- A man was taken to hospital with serious bites after he was attacked by his sister's Shar Pei while he took it out for its evening walk.

The 52-year-old man had been looking after the dog while his sister was on holiday and was taking it for a walk at about 9pm yesterday when it attacked, biting him on his arms and shins.

Members of the public ran to assist the man and managed to pull the dog away and restrain it before it was seized by police officers.

Residents in the Orrell Park area of Liverpool, said they saw the man fall over as he ran after the dog when he dropped the lead.

One resident told the Liverpool Echo : “I don’t know if he tried to grab the dog or something but it turned on him. My neighbour came out and was hitting it with a stick and managed to get it off him and tether it up.”

About eight police cars were at the scene last night and specialist cleaners were sent to clean blood from the pavement.

A police spokesman said: “The man was looking after the dog for a relative, who was on holiday, and had taken it for a walk on Warbreck Road at about 8.30pm.

“During the walk the man dropped the lead and the dog ran off. He chased the dog on to Tatton Road to try and get it back, but was subsequently attacked by the dog and suffered serious dog bites to his shin and arms, which required hospital treatment.

“Officers will be speaking to the owner of the dog on her return from holiday.”

Chinese Shar Peis are generally known for their cute and cuddly appearance but they can have a vicious streak.

Five-year-old Ethan Adamson was mauled by his mum's Shar Pei, Charlie, as he played at their Lancashire home earlier this year , scarring him for life.
