AUSTRALIA -- THE distraught owner of a Staffordshire bull terrier that attacked a woman at Rosewater on Tuesday has pleaded for the dog’s life.
A 55-year-old woman was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with a facial injury as a result of the incident in Coral St around 1pm.
The tearful owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she had had the 18-month-old dog, named Jax, since he was a pup and there had never been an issue with the animal.
She also said she The tearful dog owner said she knew the victim personally.
“She was handing something over the fence when Jax jumped up,” the owner said.
“I didn’t know if he bit her hand or she hit her head on the fence. Jax did jump up but he couldn’t see her properly. I was shocked she had been hurt.”
A passer-by is understood to have called police and an ambulance.
The dog owner said she had two teenage children who were devastated that their dog had been taken away and could be destroyed.
“The people from the council said they just wanted to see Jax and then they would leave but they took him away.” she said. “The dog just sat down and the dog catcher took him.
“I’ve had him out the front where the fences are small and he would never look to jump a fence to bite someone. My kids are broken-hearted.”
Port Adelaide and Enfield Council spokesman Nigel Hopkins said the dog had been caught and impounded.
“We have taken the dog and there will be a full investigation,’’ he said. “We would expect a decision on the future of the dog by the weekend.”
A neighbour, Christina, described Jax as “a beautiful dog’.
“The dog is very friendly and plays with my staffy, Bella, all the time,” she the 21-year-old said.
“I’ve known him for three months and there has never been an issue with him. The dog is like a third child for this family.”
