UNITED KINGDOM -- A toddler was injured when he was attacked by a dog in Kilmarnock on Tuesday night.
The three-year-old boy is understood to have been in a garden in the town’s Campsie Road at around eight o’clock when he was savaged by the pit bull terrier.
He was rushed to Crosshouse Hospital and received surgery for facial injuries.
The youngster was said to be in a stable condition on Wednesday morning and remains in hospital.
The pit bull, which did not belong to the boy’s family, has been put down with the owner’s consent, police said.
A 25-year-old man will be reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with a contravention of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland received a report of a three-year-old-boy having sustained a facial injury after being attacked by a pit bull dog in a garden in Kilmarnock.
“The child was taken to Crosshouse Hospital where he received surgery to a facial injury.
“He has been detained and staff describe his condition as stable.”
New measures to improve safety around dangerous dogs are being considered by the Scottish Government after numerous incidents in recent years.
First Minister Alex Salmond has already met parents whose children have been attacked by dogs.
