Airdrie family mourns pet dog killed by pit bull

CANADA -- An Airdrie family has been left heartbroken after a dog attack on Saturday that killed their beloved pet.

The Giesbrecht’s dog Barkley, a Cockapoo, was attacked after he approached another dog on a busy residential street.

“I was out for a jog, and my wife called me,” explained Kirk Giesbrecht. “She was pretty hysterical so I started running quicker towards home. I hung up the phone thinking I could run a little faster if I didn’t talk. And then she called back right away saying Barkley was getting mauled by a pit bull.”

Barkley was off-leash at the time. He had been in his Giesbrecht’s front yard when he ran up to a pit bull being walked on a leash.

Neighbors say at some point the pit bull became free from its leash, grabbing Barkley in its mouth.

“I heard screaming,” explains neighbor Katie Osborne. “Between my two houses, I saw a pit bull with another dog in its mouth, shaking it.”

“I ran out just to see if I could do anything,” she adds.

Barkley didn’t make it, succumbing to his injuries.

RCMP say the pit bull involved in the attack has been turned over to municipal enforcement.
