New Jersey: Police say Leonard Edwards decapitated live chickens, smeared their blood at cemetery

NEW JERSEY --  Authorities are looking for a New Jersey man who killed chickens and spilled their blood on headstones at a Linden cemetery.

Leonard L. Edwards, 41, of Wharton is wanted on charges for unlawful possession of a weapon, a fourth degree crime and animal cruelty, for needlessly killing and mutilating a live animal, police say.


While under observation by a detective at Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, he was seen using several machetes to decapitate chickens and then placing their heads by some grave-sites. He also their smeared blood on the headstones before fleeing the cemetery in his car, according to officials.

After gathering evidence at the scene and further investigation, Liden police obtained an arrest warrant for Edwards.

If convicted of the fourth degree crime, he can serve a sentence of 18 months in jail and $10,000 in fines. Animal cruelty is a lesser penalty.

Police believe the incident was some type of religious or cultural ritual.
