Puppy Near Death Saved By City Of Middletown

CONNECTICUT -- A Middletown pooch, who was perilously close to death last week, is now full of life thanks to the Middletown Police Department.

Animal control officer Gail Petrus said she was contacted by the family member of a young woman who could no longer afford to take care for her very sick four-month-old, Kira, who is believed to be a wire haired dachshund mix.

In order to administer care, the woman agreed to sign over ownership of the dog to animal control. But, of course, municipalities are not in the business of owning dogs especially those with rapidly mounting vet bills.

Nursing Kira back to health has cost the city roughly $2,000. She is recovering from the parvovirus, which can be fatal for puppies, who don’t receive basic necessary vaccines at birth.

The city is hopeful members of the public will step forward to pay for the pooch’s care and be interested in adopting her.
