TEXAS -- Animal Care Services says a 58-year-old woman is recovering this evening after she was bit by a pit bull. It happened Monday morning not far from Pershing Elementary on Bee Street as many parents were out and about walking their kids to school.
ACS says the woman was bit in the leg and while we're told it wasn't serious, Shannon Sims with Animal Care Services says this time of year it's not uncommon to see a rise in dog bites, but there are things you can teach your child to keep them safe.
"First of all parents should let their children know to never approach an animal they are not familiar with. Parents should also make sure they are never left alone with an animal even a familiar animal or an unfamiliar animal," said Sims.
Sims also says if you come across a potentially aggressive animal immediately call 311 and let them know what the situation is, and that will allow them to expedite getting an animal control officer to that location.
In certain areas of the city ACS also offers free spaying and neutering of cats and dogs.
