Boy hospitalized after pit bull attack

KANSAS -- A pit bull attack in north Wichita sent a 5-year-old to the hospital with serious injuries. Police said it happened around 6:15 Friday night near an apartment complex at 21st and Waco.

KAKE-TV spoke with the victim's family and the dog's owner, but the only thing that matches in their stories is that the dog severely bit the young boy.

The boy's family said their 5-year-old was playing with several friends in a backyard next to their apartment complex when a 60 to 70 pound pit bull targeted Miguel.

"A pit bull was running around and started chasing him around the block and the pit bull proceeded to attack him at the entrance of the drive way here," said Miguel's uncle, Michael Love.

The pit bull got a hold of Miguel's chest and ripped his left nipple away from the rest of his skin. The dog also bit him above his left eye.

"I mean we're looking at a 5-year-old that barely weighs probably 50 (pounds)," said Love.

Miguel is expected to make a full recovery, but needed dozens of stitches above and below the skin.

"I'm more upset that the owner would allow this to happen and hasn't come forth to say anything," said Love.

The pit bull's owner told a completely different story. She said the boys were playing baseball in the backyard next door and their ball went onto her property. She said Miguel crossed her fence and grabbed the ball. That's when she told KAKE-TV the dog attacked him. She said the dog stayed on her property and was on a leash the whole time.

The victim's family admits no parents were watching the kids when the attack happened. Neighbors said whether the dog was loose or on a leash, the blame shouldn't fall on the pit bull.

"I feel sorry for the little boy, I really do, but if he had parental supervision it could have been avoided because it's not the dog's fault," said Aracely Mendez. "The dog just like anybody else who feels threatened is going to defend itself."

The dog owner said police took her pit bull to the dog pound for ten days to go through several tests.

  1. "She said the dog stayed on her property and was on a leash the whole time. "

That makes this story even worse. What the owner is saying is that the dog was on a leash and under her control when it savaged this little boy. She LET IT HAPPEN. Hell, if we're going to speculate like the pit bull apologists do, why don't we just say she encouraged the pit to attack the boy....?
