MASSACHUSETTS -- Things got off to a bad start on the first day of school at the Crocker Farm Elmentary School Thursday, town meeting member said on his website, Only in the Republic of Amherst blogspot.com
"Bad start for Amherst Crocker Farm Elementary School," he said in a Tweet he also posted on the website. "Unleashed, unidentified dog bites 2 kids on playground."
Included in his tweet, is a link to a letter Principal Derek Shea sent home to parents.
"First of all, welcome back to school everyone," Shea said in his letter. "We were happy to see all of our students today and they were happy to be back seeing friends and meeting their new teachers.
Shea goes on to share information that occurred during the afternoon recess for the fourth and fifth grades.
"While the students were playing on the large playground area, an unleashed dog appeared and bit two of our students. An adult arrived on the playground and took hold of the dog. The individual and the dog quickly left the school grounds."
Shea's letter explains that the school nurse provided medical assistance to the two students, and pointed out that the students' parents were notified right away. Furthermore, he said, the police were contacted, who, in turn, "actively tried to make contact with the dog owner."
Other fourth and fifth grade students who witnessed the incident were supported as needed to address their concerns, Shea said.
"Please let us know if your child would benefit from additional support after this unfortunate event," Shea's letter concludes.
