Man Indicted on Animal Cruelty Charges in Dog Burning

TENNESSEE -- A Whitehaven man has been indicted on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals for allegedly setting his girlfriend’s dog on fire in 2012, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Tuesday.

Police investigators said the incident occurred on Sept. 5, 2012, when Brian Gillum, 31, of the 4000 block of Webbway got into an argument with his girlfriend over his car keys.

Gillum picked up her two-year-old miniature Doberman Pinscher named Bentley and walked outside onto the patio where he doused the dog with lighter fluid and set it on fire, investigators said.

The dog sustained extensive burns on its legs, hind quarters, face and eyes and had to be euthanized.

Aggravated cruelty to animals is a felony that carries one to six years in prison.
