Police: 4 people bit by out-of-control dog

ARIZONA -- A male pit bull terrier that bit four people on Saturday died after being Tased multiple times during an attempt to place it in a kennel.

Emergency crews were called to the 2300 block of Kaibab Drive for a report of multiple dog bites.

According to Bullhead City Police Department spokeswoman Emily Fromelt, the dogs’ owner, 66-year-old Jeanne Hardy, was bitten several times on her arms by one dog while trying to break up a fight between two pit bulls. Hardy’s two brothers, who tried to help her break up the dog fight, suffered bites to their hands by the same dog.

A neighbor who also tried to help break up the fight was bitten on the ankle.

When an Animal Care and Welfare Officer went to the residence to pick up the dog for mandatory quarantine, the dog was extremely aggressive and out of control, Fromelt said.

The dog had never been in a kennel or a vehicle, Fromelt said, and records indicated it had not received a rabies vaccination.

The dog attempted to bite Bullhead City police officers who also tried to help control the dog. The dog almost freed itself from the two catch poles that were around its neck and  officers had to Taser the dog multiple times in order to put it into a kennel and prevent it from biting anyone else.

Officers discovered later that the dog had died while in the kennel.

Bullhead City Fire paramedics transported the four bite victims to WARMC. Due to the extent of Hardy’s injuries, she was flown to a Las Vegas hospital for further treatment. Her condition was not available Sunday.

The other victims were treated and released.

There were a total of four unlicensed dogs at the residence, two male pit bulls and two female pit bulls, Fromelt said. Charges are pending for unlicensed pets and violation of the three-dog limit.
