TENNESSEE -- A Mt. Pleasant woman is recovering from being mauled by a dog who dragged her off her front porch Monday and bit her from “head to toe,” Maury County Animal Control Officer Randy Bratton said.
Shelby Cates, 64, had just fed the 4-1/2 year-old, boxer / bulldog mix (American Bulldog?) and was sitting in a rocking chair at her Dry Creek Road residence when the dog broke its restraint and attacked her, he said.
The attack occurred in front of the woman’s two grandchildren. Her grandson attempted to use a hot dog to lure the animal away. When that failed, the boy then grabbed a glass pickle jar and hit the dog while the other child ran next door to get a neighbor, he said.
Bratton said the neighbor was able to stop the dog attack using a baseball bat.
The woman was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. The dog was surrendered to the Maury County Animal Shelter where it will remain for a mandatory quarantine for 10 days.
