TEXAS -- Johnson County Precinct 4 Judge Johnny Bekkelund on Tuesday set a Cleburne man’s bond at $2,000 on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animals.
The charge against Daniel Pederson, 33, involves a dog left in the backyard of a home on Dove Creek Road near the Cleburne city border.
Johnson County Sheriff’s Office officers responded to the home in August, JCSO Detective Steve Shaw said, on reports of the property overgrown with weeds several feet tall.
A dog was also reportedly somewhere in the backyard among the weeds and heat of August, Shaw said.
In addition, six Pomeranians were allegedly in the home’s garage in kennel cages or carriers and witnesses reported an odor of decay from the garage.
No one lives at the house, Shaw said.
Officials received a search warrant for the home and located one dead dog locked inside a carrying cage in the garage.
Officials could not initially locate the dog in the backyard but set a cage trap, which captured the dog about two hours later.
That dog, which Shaw described as a mixed breed, was turned over to the humane society.
“From what I’ve heard that dog can be saved and is adoptable,” Shaw said.
Pederson failed to appear during a seizure hearing held several weeks ago to determine dispensation of the surviving dog, Shaw said.
He also failed to appear during a Monday hearing on a public nuisance cause relating to the state of the Dove Creek Road property at which point Bekkelund issued a bench warrant to bring Pederson to court.
The property is allegedly overgrown and filled with rubbish and an abandoned vehicle.
The nuisance charge is a class C misdemeanor, Shaw said. The cruelty to animals is a class A misdemeanor. Pederson also had several outstanding Cleburne warrants for traffic violations.
Pederson’s animal cruelty charge now goes to the county attorney’s office for disposition, Shaw said.
