NEW JERSEY -- The New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating an incident in which 15 dogs were left at the Lake Hiawatha Swim Club.
The dogs were found on Oct. 4 by township patrol officer Jason Ferreira, who was responding to a report of the dogs being left there, according to a police report issued on Tuesday.
Arriving at the scene, with assistance from Patrol Sgt. Matthew LaManna and officers Thomas Armenti and Ted Anderson, he found a blue Jeep with an attached trailer in the parking lot.
Four dogs were found inside the Jeep and 11 more dogs were found in what were described in the report as “makeshift cages.”
According to the report, the investigation resulted in locating the vehicle’s owner, an unidentified 72-year-old man from Orange who allegedly lives out of the Jeep.
Animal-control officer Heidi Mooney of the Parsippany-Troy Hills Animal Control Unit responded to the scene and took control of the case, the report stated, and a deputy chief of the NJSPCA also was contacted.
Police referred further inquiries to the NJSPCA. NJSPCA spokesperson Matt Stanton said the investigation was ongoing and confirmed that the dogs had been signed over to Parsippany Animal Control. Stanton presumed the charges being investigated involved animal abandonment.
Animal-control staff at the Parsippany shelter confirmed the dogs were at their shelter and were “OK,” but declined further comment due to the ongoing investigation. They also denied the Daily Record’s request to photograph the dogs, citing the ongoing investigation.
