Pit bull attack hospitalizes woman

CALIFORNIA -- A pit bull attack seriously hurt a 61-year-old woman in the Hemet-area community of Valle Vista, county animal control officials say.

The mauling happened about 6:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, along the 25500 block of Minorca Street.

The woman was hospitalized for treatment of bites on her head, arms and stomach, a deputy told a Riverside County Department of Animal Services worker.

"She was walking alone when a dog broke loose from its tether, escaped its yard and attacked the woman, according to a witness," Animal Services spokesman John Welsh said in a written statement.

Her name was not released, and her condition was not immediately available.

The dog is a 1-year-old neutered pit bull, according to the statement. The animal's owner gave permission for it to be euthanized, according to the statement.
