Vancouver family attacked, pet mauled by two dogs

WASHINGTON -- A dachshund and family was attacked in its Vancouver yard by two large dogs that were on the loose Friday evening.

“It looked like a rag doll getting tossed by a big, strong dog,” said James Lewis, the dog’s owner.

Alexys Stumpf, 13, saw her stepdad free Dave, the dog being attacked, from the other dog’s jaws.

Stumpf and her mom, Wynter Lewis, covered Dave in blankets and rushed to take the dog to the hospital.

The other dogs were waiting though.

"They came back and they started attacking and trying to get to my dog,” Stumpf said. “They were trying to finish the job.”

James Lewis then realized his hand had been badly bitten by the dogs.

"Mainly just a big fang tooth entry mark and then I just couldn't feel these two end fingers really.”

Dave had multiple surgeries in the 40 hours following the Friday night attack.

"Dave gave me a look like he just wanted to live. Thank you for saving my life,” James Lewis said.  “I want to live, you know. It was just a sad little look. So there was no doubt I was going to put out the money to try and save him."

The Lewis family says they spotted the dogs in another neighbor’s yard Saturday.

They called animal control and the dogs were taken in.

Clark County Animal Control confirmed to KATU News Monday that the dogs were being housed at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington.

A spokesperson also confirmed that animal control has made contact with the owner, who is homeless. Its investigation revealed that only one of the two dogs was responsible for the attack. The owner has agreed to relinquish that dog. He may get the other one back, though, if he can pay fines and get it licensed.

The Lewis family would like to see the money go to Dave's vet bills. They can take the owner to small claims court, but they know that might be difficult since he's homeless.

In the meantime the family has started a GoFundMe.com account to help pay for Dave’s veterinary bills.
