Kaine Kitchen shot stepfather's dog with crossbow

MISSOURI -- An 18-year-old man was arrested Friday for allegedly shooting a dog with a crossbow at a north-central Columbia trailer park in September.

A witness told an animal control officer she saw Kaine G. Kitchen shoot an adult beagle mix with an arrow and saw the dog run off with the arrow in its shoulder about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at Rustic Meadows trailer park, according to a probable cause statement.

Another witness told a police officer she didn’t see what happened but after hearing yelping and a dog running away, she saw Kitchen walk up and he said he shot the dog because it was in the trash and “nobody wanted it anyway,” the statement said.

The dog, named Winnie, was taken to the animal shelter and then to the University of Missouri veterinary clinic. A vet at the shelter examined the dog Sept. 15 and found “a laceration with a deep pocket wound in the dog’s upper left shoulder.”

A microchip implanted in the dog traced it back to its owner, Larry Bostic, who moved to St. Louis in June and left the dog with his daughter and ex-girlfriend. Bostic spoke to investigators over the phone. A witness told the animal control officer that Kitchen is Bostic’s stepson.

A warrant for felony animal abuse was issued Oct. 21, and Kitchen was booked into the Boone County Jail just before 2 p.m. Friday. He also had a municipal warrant for marijuana possession and a warrant out of Moberly for marijuana possession. Kitchen is being held on bond totaling $10,778.

Bostic also has a warrant out for his arrest, issued on Sept. 10, on suspicion of first-degree burglary for allegedly forcing his way into a man’s house in March with two women, Ebony and Deirdre Kitchen, and assaulting the man, according to court records.
