Small dog attacked and killed by three Cane Corsos

CANADA -- A Coquitlam family is mourning the loss of their beloved dog after it was attacked and killed by three dogs while out for a walk with its owner.

The incident happened Monday afternoon in the 200-block of Hart Street in Coquitlam.

John Bakirgis’ wife was taking their dog, Kloe, for a walk when three large Cane Corso dogs escaped from a front yard and attacked.

Only a large hedge separates the yard from the road, and there is no fence.

“The three dogs jumped out of the hedge, attacked my dog, and shredded it,” says Bakirgis, pointing to fresh blood on the sidewalk.

“The woman had no control over her dogs; it wasn’t until the neighbour came out, that the dogs stopped attacking my dog and lunging at my wife,” he says.

“There’s an elementary school nearby and any of those children could have been a victim.”

Neighbour Steve Hendriks says there’s been issues at the home before.

“There’s only a bush that separates the dogs from the street, they’ve been on my front lawn, and I have a 2-year-old little girl,” he says.

“Once my wife had to take the dogs back to the house and tell the lady, ‘your dogs are loose are running around on the street’ and she was told ‘it’s fine, they are friendly dogs.’”

Coquitlam RCMP say they are investigating in conjunction with the local SPCA.

Bakirigis says he’s frustrated that the dogs cannot immediately be seized.

“Neither the police or animal control can do anything about it,”  he says. “They need to go through due process, they can’t just get in there, and take the dogs.”
