SPCA aids rescue of 49 cats in extreme hoarding case

NEVADA -- The SPCA of Northern Nevada (SPCA) came to the rescue of an individual in Humboldt County in an extreme case of cat hoarding, affecting more than 120 cats.

About 40 cats were living inside a small home and the rest of the cats were living in makeshift cages outside with only some covered by tarps. The cats had been living there for years, mostly outside during extreme high and low temperatures.

The SPCA partnered with Animal Rescue Group of Northern Nevada (ARGONN), a staff veterinarian, staff vet assistant, and an animal control officer from Mineral County and took their mobile veterinary clinic and SPCA van to examine and return with as many felines as possible.

Sixty cats were processed in three hours; they were vaccinated, blood tests were administered, identifying collars were placed.

Forty-nine cats, 14 kittens and a duck were brought back for rescue; kittens were placed into foster care and older cats were prepared for adoption, with more efforts planned.
