NEW YORK -- Two people were mauled by a pit bull in their Gates home Saturday night while pet sitting for a friend, according to the Gates Police Department.
Lt. Jon Ballard said the man was asleep when the 3-year-old dog attacked him, inflicting numerous bite wounds to his head. A woman in the house tried to stop the dog but was also bit on the forearm.
The couple was taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries and both needed several stitches, said Ballard.
Police seized the dog and will hold it for at least 10 days while police talk to the owner of the dog, who is from Rochester.
"We will be looking as to whether the dog is considered a dangerous dog, at which time we can ask a judge to order the dog to be put down or we will be asking the owner to voluntarily put the dog down,"said Gates Police Chief Jim VanBrederode.
