MISSOURI -- He says he was just doing his job and doesn't want any publicity. But owners of two stray dogs have a tail-wagging ending thanks to a dedicated Kansas City motorcycle officer.
The officer, who has declined to be identified, stopped Tuesday morning to help out the two pooches who were in a grassy area on off ramp from 75th Street to northbound U.S. 71. He prevented the husky and German shepherd mix from bolting into traffic.
The police officer didn’t have a car to place the dogs inside, because he was patrolling on a motorcycle. Instead, he called for help and then sat on the side of the road with the lost dogs, petting them and keeping them calm until help could arrive.
Debbie Davis said the officer went above and beyond his call of duty.
“It’s over and above for anyone,” she said. “It’s cold. Most people wouldn’t look twice at some dogs running around.”
Debbie shared the photo of the officer with the dogs on Facebook. Thousands saw it — and shared it.
That Facebook post went viral when it was shared by animal rescue groups and even the Kansas City Police Department's Facebook posted "Love this!"
Animal control picked up the dogs and took them to the KC Pet Project.
If that isn’t enough to pull at your heart strings. The owners were desperately searching for their lost pets, and were soon reunited with their dogs at a local animal shelter.
The dogs’ owners, Austin and Ashley Mozingo, went to the KC Pet Project looking for them after they escaped from their yard Monday night.
“It was heartbreaking when you see him in a cage, but then, it’s relief, when you know you can take him home with you,” Ashley said.
Ashley likes the picture of her pooches with the police officer.
“It’s adorable,” she said. “He’s just chillin’ with them.”
“I think that’s an awesome story,” Austin said. “It’s good to know there are still police officers out there who still enjoy helping out the community, especially in helping out such sweet dogs.”
With all of the bad publicity surrounding law enforcement in recent months, it warms the heart to see such a selfless act by a police officer.
