VIRGINIA -- Prosecutors this week dropped charges against a Nokesville auction owner who had been charged with animal cruelty.
Larry Sams, owner of Cross States Stables on Va. 28 in Nokesville, had been scheduled to stand trial in Prince William General District Court on 58 counts of animal cruelty Dec. 11, but before his trial began, prosecutors made a motion to declare the charges nolle prosequi.
That means that prosecutors do not wish to pursue the charges at this time. The charges could be brought back at a later date.
Larry D. Sams was convicted last year of misdemeanor charges of inadequate care for agricultural animals.
Also on Dec. 11, a judge found Sams’ daughter, Carolyn Sams, not guilty of animal cruelty, according to court records.
Sams and his daughter were arrested last year after police conducted a search warrant at Sams’ business and seized dozens of animals including rabbits, sheep, goats, horses, dogs, chickens and a bull calf.
