Fairfax animal control officer rescues injured bald eagle

VIRGINIA -- Using only a blanket, a Fairfax County Animal Control officer was able to rescue an injured bald eagle found in an area park this week.

Fairfax County Animal Control was called to Huntley Meadows Park in the Alexandria Nov. 3 after park visitors saw an injured bald eagle that appeared unable to fly, police said in a news release.

Officer Kathy Pruncal searched the woods for the bald eagle, found it, and was able to secure it using nothing but a blanket, police said.

The injured eagle hopped around brush piles and trees in the park, and tried to swim away in the marsh, as the officer pursued it, witnesses said. One park visitor helped the officer by blocking off exit routes for the eagle.

Local photographer Mike Powell was in the park at the time and posted photos of the eagle and his rescue on his blog.

Powell and other park visitors were able to catch a glimpse of the bird after the officer captured it.

“The eagle seemed to have settled down a bit and appeared to be resting comfortably,” Powell wrote on his blog.

The animal control officer took the eagle to a veterinarian who determined the bird had a broken wing and may have been poisoned by pesticide.

The bird will be treated at a rehabilitation center in southern Virginia before being released back into the wild, police said.
