Lake Twp. residents face animal cruelty charges

PENNSYLVANIA -- Animal cruelty investigators have seized more than 50 cats from a Lake Township home after finding the caged animals living in squalor and developing health problems, according to court documents.

A search warrant application returned Tuesday says investigators recovered 55 cats from the home of Robert and Marilyn Dale, of 148 Tulip Road, after a person tipped off the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Luzerne County about possible mistreatment on Dec. 1.

The tipster reported buying a Manx kitten from the Dales that had several health problems, including ear mites, a parasite infestation, and a prolapsed rectum, according to an affidavit filed in court by Humane Society police officer Carol Morrison.

The Dales are known to breed Manx cats for sale and have been the subject of similar complaints in the past, the affidavit says.

Upon visiting the home on Dec. 2, investigators found two kittens with possible ear mites and one with a possible respiratory infection, police said.

Robert Dale admitted keeping adult cats in another building on the property and allowed investigators to enter a structure that had an extreme smell of urine and feces, the warrant says. Most of the cats were in cages, but some were loose.

Morrison alleged the animals were not getting veterinary care as she applied for the warrant, which was executed Dec. 4.

Court records indicated no charges had been filed as of Tuesday.
