Louisiana: Eugene Grayer, 49, accused of raising pit bulls for dog fighting

LOUISIANA -- Police accused a Baker man this week of raising more than a dozen pit bulls at his home for dog fighting purposes.

Baker PD charged 49-year-old Eugene Grayer with possession of dogs for fighting and being a felon in possession of a firearm after a search of his home Monday night.

Investigators said someone called in a complaint Monday about noises that sounded like dog fighting coming from woods behind Grayer's home on McHugh Road. A Baker Police officer who responded contacted Grayer, and said he was told the dogs sometimes "cut up" during feeding time. He said Grayer had 17 to 20 pit bulls in his backyard, which Grayer said he raised for friendly weight-pulling contests.

The officer said Grayer violated an ordinance for having more than 12 domesticated animals on his property, so he had animal control come out and search for dogfighting training equipment. They said they found weight training equipment and a treadmill for dogs, at which point they arrested Grayer.

The officer said Grayer also told them he had two guns inside, which police found and seized.

Investigators said Grayer had a lengthy criminal history with felony charges for narcotics. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on the charges.
