Man arrested for animal cruelty after shooting dogs with crossbow

GEORGIA -- A Bloomingdale man is now behind bars after he was arrested on Saturday for cruelty to animals, according to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office the man was at a hunting club and allegedly shot two dogs with a crossbow.


 
The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on Auriga Blvd, Dwane Gilchrist, age 54, was hunting at the Roebling Road Hunting Club directly behind a residence when he claims the dogs were menacing him.

A family that lived near the hunting club went searching for their two full blooded Labrador Retrievers after discovering they weren't in the yard. Soon after the search began the family saw their 6 month male dog, Django, walk up to them with an arrow in its chest.

 

Shortly after discovering Django their second dog 2-year-old female lab Bella was found dead of a arrow wound.

Django was taken to the Savannah Emergency Veterinary Clinic on Stephenson Avenue in Savannah and is in critical condition, he expected to see a surgeon on Monday to undergo a potentially life saving procedure.

According to ECSO spokesman Sergeant Don White, Gilchrist was 40 yards away from the dogs on the hunting trail when he shot the first dog and then reloaded to shoot the second one.

The family who owns the dogs is pressing charges against Gilchrist and he is being held in the ECSO jail awaiting a bond hearing.
