Police Search for Missing K-9 Unit Dog in Wilmington

OHIO -- Wilmington Police Department's K-9, Karson, is still missing after escaping from a kennel on Tuesday.

According to Wilmington Police Department's Facebook page, Karson escaped a boarding kennel at the Clinton Animal Care Center, located at 960 W. Locust St.

According to the page, after Karson escaped, he was seen running northeast toward the high school around 3 p.m.

Officers said he was last seen 4:30-5 p.m. on Tuesday on Ohio 73 near Mitchell Road.

The search was suspended about 9:30 p.m. for the night. Officers said they hoped Karson would find a place to sleep for the night and then look for food in the morning.

The search resumed for a few hours Thursday morning, but was again suspended Thursday afternoon due to the weather.

Karson's handler is on vacation, so he was being boarded at the kennel. He has never been assigned to any other officers.

They believe the 2-year-old Belgian Malinois escaped the kennel before he was about to be groomed. Karson did not bite anyone at the kennel.

He had been boarded before.

The department purchased Karson in 2013 for $17,500 and said they had invested another $2,500 into his care and training since then.

Crews from Franklin Township, Mason, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Clinton County Sheriff's Office assisted with the search Tuesday night.

Karson is estimated to weigh between 60 and 65 pounds. He was wearing a leather collar without dog tags.

Officers said no one should approach Karson if he is seen. They have received several calls about his possible whereabouts and do not believe that he is in any danger for the night.

Anyone who sees Karson was asked to contact WPD at 937-382-3833.
