PENNSYLVANIA -- An Upper Nazareth Township woman was sentenced after pleading guilty to storing a menagerie of animals in filthy conditions in a shed.
Roseanne Yost, 47, had pleaded guilty in October to 74 animal cruelty charges. A Northampton County judge last week ordered Yost to pay $1,575 in fines and restitution.
Yost is prohibited from obtaining more pets for a period of 360 days and banned from owning more than four pets at one time for the next 20 years, according to The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Yost had been cited following an August rescue operation for unsanitary confinement of more than 100 animals and for failure to provide veterinary care, the PSPCA had announced.
The animals were kept in a shed the PSPCA described as filthy on the property where she lives, in the 3400 block of Daniels Road. The animals had included pigeons, cats, dogs and chickens.
Yost surrendered the animals to the PSPCA and officers transported them to the PSPCA headquarters in Philadelphia. Two pigeons had died on arrival and approximately seven more animals had to be euthanized due to poor medical conditions, according to the PSPCA.
The PSPCA was able to place almost all of the remaining animals in permanent homes. However, a few cats remain at the shelter, still recovering from illnesses.
"The PSPCA is the only organization in Pennsylvania capable of handling large-scale rescues like this one," said Jerry Buckley, chief executive officer of organization, in a statement. "Many of these animals needed significant rehabilitation and time to heal."
All of the PSPCA's programs, including humane law enforcement and its shelter hospital, are funded by donations, he said.
