Woman and her two greyhounds attacked by pit bull while walking in West Palm Beach neighborhood

FLORIDA -- Elizabeth Paquette and her two greyhounds, Zack and Mazie, are resting after all three were attacked by a neighbor's pit bull last Friday.

“I’m having a hard time sleeping at night,” said Paquette.

Elizabeth said she was walking her dogs on New York Street around noon when two dogs charged at her.

“Took a running leaping jump on me and bit me on the chest, took me to the ground. I dropped the leash and my dogs ran," she said.

Elizabeth said the pit bull then went after her dogs, biting Zack on the leg. Mazie suffered a cut to her face. She called the police, then Animal Care and Control, and was taken to the hospital.  The pit bull, named Nala, is now in quarantine at Animal Care and Control for rabies vaccinations.

“I’m in a lot of shock. This was very traumatic. I mean this is a street I live on and walk on every day, and this dog comes out and attacks me. These dogs aren’t even vaccinated,” she said.

Nala was adopted from Animal Care and Control a few years ago. Captain Dave Walesky said she has no previous incidents, and an investigator is looking into the case; but there’s a good chance, she’ll be back with her owners soon.

“They do plan on coming to get Nala. Typically at the end of the quarantine, the dog can go home,” he said. “ If there is enough cause to go forward with dangerous dog classification, we would work that out before she goes home.”

It's not the outcome Elizabeth was expecting.

“We have children that live on this street and the families are very worried about this; and we have businesses on this street, and there’s a lot of liability,” said Paquette. “ I mean, I’m glad this happened to me and not to a small child really.”

Animal Care and Control said if Nala successfully completes quarantine, she’ll be home before the New Year.
