WEST VIRGINIA -- Nearly four dozen dogs were removed from a home in Worthington in Marion County after being left outside in the bitter temperatures with no food, water, or even proper shelter.
"There was not any hay or straw in the dog houses. The water was all froze," said Cathy Reed-Vanata, Vice President of the Marion County Humane Society.
Volunteers from the Marion County Humane Society received a tip that several Basset Beagles were living in poor conditions. That's when Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Department stepped in and the scene was not pleasant.
"The one dog that we found probably has a tumor, I want to say the size of a small soccer ball underneath her. Several of the dogs are pregnant again," said Reed-Vanata.
What started as a good deed led to a hoarding situation. The owners female dog apparently mated with their neighbor's dog and that's when things began to get out of hand.
"All of these dogs that we took today are breeded. They just kept breeding, breeding, and breeding and that is how it became so out of control," said Reed-Vanata.
Over 30 dogs were seized outside and one by one they were put into vans where they arrived at their new home at the Humane Society. And that's not all. Volunteers were able to find more dogs inside of the home, making the total come to 45 dogs.
Three dogs were left behind and will continue to be checked on.
The homeowners were cooperative with authorities and agreed to sign off on the dogs, so no charges are pending. Some are up for adoption, while others will need medical attention.
"It was your typical hoarding situation. A woman got overwhelmed with dogs and she didn't know how to get rid of them and didn't want to get rid of them. She had an emotional attachment to them, but could not properly care for them. Some were with tumors, some were underweight, some were old, and she just didn't know how to stop it. She didn't have help, but she finally got the help when we reached out and helped her," said Garrett Mock, employee at Marion County Humane Society.
Volunteers say they are glad to lend a helping hand in hopes of finding these dogs a forever home.
