Animal cruelty court date for Erin Sanders is postponed

OHIO -- A municipal court hearing was postponed Friday morning after a defendant, charged with committing cruelty to animals, requested a continuance.

Erin Sanders, 26, of Lancaster, was arrested Sept. 10 after police found a dead dog in the trunk of a car in his garage. The 2-year-old black lab-pit bull mix's throat appeared to have been slit, and it was wrapped in a piece of old carpet. Sanders is facing a cruelty to animal charge, a second-degree misdemeanor.

The Lancaster Police Department responded to a disturbance call in the 500 block of Locust Street on Sept. 10. Neighbors explained to the officers that Sanders had been arguing with a woman and that they believed Sanders had killed his dog, according to police reports.

Sanders, who was home when the police arrived, denied the accusations when first questioned, according to the report. Police continued to search the residence because family and neighbors believed that Sanders had killed the dog because his landlord would be installing new carpet and would not allow the dog to live there.

Family and neighbors of Sanders told police that they believed Sanders had taken the dog, Oscar, to a set of railroad tracks and slit his throat. Oscar did not die, so Sanders brought him back to his garage and killed him there, they told police.

Officers on the scene searched Sanders' garage and found a pool of blood inside but did not find the dog. Upon a second search of the garage, Oscar was found in the trunk of Sanders' car wrapped in carpet.

Sanders then admitted to police that he had killed the dog because his landlord had told him that he could have only one dog after the new carpet was installed, according to the report.

He told police that he had tried to get rid of the dog at the pound, but when there was no room for the animal at the pound, he killed it, according to police reports.

Sanders was arrested and brought to the Fairfield County Jail.

Family members told police that they would give Oscar a proper burial.
