Brian Patrick Murphy pleads guilty to felony animal cruelty

CALIFORNIA -- A man who injured an 8-week-old dog by closing its muzzle with rubber bands pleaded guilty to one felony count of animal cruelty on Thursday, Jan. 8, according to Riverside County Animal Services and Superior Court records.

Brian Patrick Murphy, 67, was sentenced to 37 days in jail, received three years formal probation and cannot own an animal for 10 years. The incident happened in Desert Hot Springs.


Raquel Mims, the owner of the terrier-Chihuahua mix named Snookie, has pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

The dog, whose tongue was cut, had to have reconstructive surgery.

A Yucca Valley family adopted the dog and renamed him Chopper.
