Couple charged with animal cruelty

MISSISSIPPI -- The Clarke County Sheriff's Department has charged a couple with animal cruelty.

Chief Deputy Barry White said Pamela May, 32, and Earl May, 33, of Clarke County Road 664 in Quitman, were each charged with five counts of animal cruelty. The counts are all misdemeanors.

White said deputies were called to the home Jan. 1 to check on a horse and five dogs.

"When the deputies arrived, the horse was already down," White said. "They tried to bring it up and prop it up, but couldn't. They came back the next day with a veterinarian, but the horse's condition had worsened and the vet recommended the horse be put down, which the deputies consented for the vet to do. The animal then had to be transported off for burial."

White said the deputies found five malnourished dogs and decided to seize the dogs at that time. The couple was not at the home at the time.

"Seven days later, (on Thursday) the couple returned and the deputies arrested the pair at 9 a.m.," White said. "The Clarke County Sheriff's office was able to find a home for the dogs for the past seven days and they have been well-taken care of."
