Dumped Dogs Story Turns Out to be a Hoax

NEW YORK -- A Wyoming County man who told authorities he found a mother dog, 11 live puppies and one deceased puppy abandoned alongside a road has now been charged in the case.

The original report claimed the dogs were found on a blanket next to a dumpster outside an apartment building on Oak Street in Warsaw early Wednesday morning. At that time the temperature was an estimated -10 degrees.

Village of Warsaw Police Chief Peter Hoffmeister says they were able to uncover the true story of what happened to the mother dog and pups thanks to social media and tips called in after the story was reported by local media.

Hoffmeister said police were contacted by the owner of the dogs that she was out of town and had left them in the care of the man who claimed to have found them.

The police chief said Jeremiah Cieszynski, 27, admitted making the whole thing up after he was contacted by police. He said he and his girlfriend, Sally Simms, 24, could no longer care for the dogs and were afraid of being turned down if they simply surrendered them.

So the two allegedly devised the abandonment story hoping to gain the sympathy of the animal control officer, and the public thereby ensuring that the dogs would be accepted. Cieszynski and Simms are now charged with offering a false instrument for filing and conspiracy.

The investigation also determined that the one deceased puppy died at birth. The remaining eleven pups and their mom have all since been adopted.
