Eight charged after injured dogs found in South Side home

ILLINOIS -- Eight people have been charged after officers found four injured dogs and a fighting ring at a West Englewood residence, police said.

Police responded to a complaint around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 6600 block of South Winchester Avenue and found four pit bulls and a dogfighting ring in a home, police said. The eight were taken into custody and appeared in Cook County bond court Monday.

Officers found one dog lying on its side in severe distress and there was fresh blood throughout the home, prosecutors said Monday.

Jawaan Chick, 22, was charged with felony dogfighting by someone who owns or breeds fighting animals.

  
  
  

Chick, of the 200 block of Providence Drive in Matteson, and Shaquille Middleton, 20, of the 3900 block of South Timberlea Court, in Country Club Hills, who was charged with attending a dog fight, were each ordered held without bail.

Six others were charged with attending a dogfight: Sabrina Morris, 44, of the 6600 block of South Winchester Avenue, was ordered held on $10,000 bail; Taylon Hughes, 24, 7800 block of South Kingston Avenue, $10,000 bail; Charles Ray, 28, 2600 block of East 74th Place, $10,000 bail; Jimmie Kelly, 59, 6600 block of South Winchester, $10,000 bail; Arnulfo Sanchez, 37, 15100 block of Turlington Avenue, Harvey; and William Hill, 18, of the 6600 block of South Winchester, $10,000 bail. A bail amount for Sanchez was not available.

Animal Care and Control took custody of the four injured dogs, police said.
