North Carolina: Fort Bragg soldier John Burrow and wife Kelsey Burrow arrested in 'horrific case of animal cruelty'

NORTH CAROLINA -- Cumberland County authorities arrested a Fayetteville couple in what was called a “horrific case of animal cruelty.”

Fort Bragg soldier John Garrett Burrow, 22, and his wife, Kelsey Caroline Burrow, 20, of 440 Georgetown Circle in Fayetteville were arrested Thursday after authorities said they intentionally drowned their puppy.

John Burrow tied the puppy's feet together using a parachute cord and then tied its feet to its nose before throwing it in McFayden Pond to drown, authorities said.

The puppy, an 8-month-old Lab mix named Riley, had run away from home more than once and had been injured. The Burrows said they could not afford Riley's vet bills.

John Burrow posted to Facebook shortly after Thanksgiving that Riley was in Charlotte being treated for a broken femur, authorities said.

On Jan. 2, Riley's body washed up on McFayden Pond's shore, authorities said.

John Burrow was charged with felony cruelty to animals. Kelsey Burrow faces a misdemeanor charge of accessory after the fact.

John Burrow was being held under $10,000 secured bond. Authorities changed his bond to unsecured under the release to his commander. Kelsey Burrow is being held under a $2,000 unsecured bond, authorities said.
