MARYLAND -- A pit bull fatally attacked his 87-year-old owner at their Frederick home as the man took down the Christmas tree, Frederick County sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies, Frederick police officers and county animal control officers witnessed part of the attack of Eugene W. Smith after they were called to the home on Stonehouse Road about 2:30 p.m., officials said in a statement.
Officers subdued the pet and Smith was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where he died from injuries sustained during the attack, authorities said.
Investigators learned that the 84-pound dog pounced on Smith as he was on the ground taking down the Christmas tree. The dog was a pit bull rescue that had lived at the home since May with Smith, his son and his son’s fiancĂ©e.
County Animal Control officers removed the dog from the home and euthanized it, officials said.
