Michigan: Dog found frozen to ground, William Childress charged with felony animal cruelty

MICHIGAN -- An Ecorse man is being charged with multiple counts of animal torture and cruelty after his dog was found frozen to the ground last week.

Elsa, a chow-mix, was found frozen to the ground February 17th. The 10-year-old dog was trapped after her lead was wrapped around her leg and the side of her body was frozen to the ground.

Marylou Rotrock heard Elsa making a lot of noise so she went to check on her inside William Childress' yard.

"I kept hearing (the dog), so I had to walk over there," Rotrock told FOX 2 last week. "And I'm not one that goes over on other people's property. Something told me I had to."

Fox 2 first reported Elsa's story last night. How her lead was wrapped around her leg, her side frozen to ground. She had bleeding paws and frost bitten ears while laying inches from a frozen bowl of water.

"There was no food in the bowl and some of the excrement had plastic bag pieces in it," Rotrock said, "So these dogs were eating anything they could."

The dog was taken to Healthy Paws in Westland for treatment and thousands of dollars poured in to help.

"The owner said he put the dog out at 5 a.m. and we responded somewhere between 9:30 and 10:00 am," Ecorse Police Chief Mike Moore said.

"It's been some brutal weather here we are talking -10 below, -11 below," Moore said. "And it doesn't take long for animals to freeze. You have to take them in very quickly."

Rotrock said she isn't buying the owner's story.

"I don't think he's been there for the last few days," she said. "And that's when it was so frigid. So those dogs may have been there for days? They have been, they never come in."

Childress was initially cited but detectives took a further look at the case and decided to pursue felony charges of animal cruelty.

On Tuesday, two charges were filed against Childress: One for torture of an animal and one for abandoning/cruelty to two or three animals.
