Pathologist: woman unconscious before dog attack

LOUISIANA -- A pathologist has concluded that the 85-year-old Grant Parish woman found dead in November with several dog bites to her lower body was unconscious before she was bitten.

The death of Bobbie Chevalier was initially reported as a stray dog attack, but investigators found zero evidence of a struggle and learned that Chevalier had diabetes, Grant Parish Sheriff Steven McCain said.

Deputies found Chevalier's body in her back yard the day before Thanksgiving with several dog bites on the lower half of her body, McCain said. She died several days later.

A stray dog and several dogs belonging to her neighbor that investigators suspected may have been responsible for the attack were seized and euthanized, McCain said. No dog attacks have been reported since Chevalier's death.

"The investigative report will be turned over to the Grant Parish District Attorney's Office for its review and any further proceedings," McCain said.
